The Spring Lake Heights School District, located on 12 acres in suburban Spring Lake Heights, serves students K-8 in the elementary school and is a sending district to Manasquan High School for its resident 9-12 students. The school motto, Excellence by Example, is reflected in the outstanding academic achievement of its student body, the progressive technology program, the deep commitment to strong professional development for the entire staff and the wide array of extracurricular programs tailored to student interests. The school personnel set high learning expectations and nurture students’ self esteem, while also establishing opportunities for parents and educators to share partnering information such as student strengths and learning preferences. We are a district that prides itself on having a curriculum aligned with state standards and a staff that knows those standards, a focus on high academic standards for all students, a “no excuses” attitude of teachers and administrators, a passion for improvement, involvement of all adults (including custodians, cafeteria workers, secretaries, and parents) to achieve school goals, and most importantly, a sense of belonging and collaboration. The K-8 school has established a “school within a school program” for its middle school students that include a middle school schedule and approach, a weekly elective program, a student council, and the opportunity to take advanced foreign language and mathematical courses. The K-3 Language Arts Literacy curriculum offers a balanced literacy program that incorporates a program that promotes phonemic awareness using multi sensory methods (PAF), literature selections from trade books and the district text, and a strong guided reading component. Interdisciplinary projects are evidenced K-8. Parents and community members are actively involved in many district initiatives through the PTA. The PTA and the Superintendent communicate to parents the importance of positive relationships between parents, their children and the organization through its formal and informal activities. The Superintendent hosts many ad hoc committees for parents and community members in the area of finance, facilities and curriculum. The district recently completed its 5-year strategic plan with a committee that included students, parents, community members, administration and Board of Education members.
